Significance of 108

1 0 8

The Mysteries that surround "108" still remains sacred today among many yogic cultures. Many believe that merely seeing the numbers 1, 0, 8 in order bring good luck and wisdom to the one that sees it. Renowned mathematicians of Vedic culture view 108 as a number representing the wholeness of existance.

1 - 0 - 8

Purusha - Samadhi - Prakrti

Prakrti is everything that isn't conscious, like nature, matter and even things like thoughts and personality. True consciousness resides only in Purusha, or more properly, as Purusha. "1" represents Purusha and "8" represents Prakrti, but to separate the two opposites, you must bring in the situation of Samadhi (non-existence/no-mind) which is represented by the "0". In a way, this is yoga. The number 108 represents the process of yoga - the separation of Purusha from Prakrti by creating a state of Samadhi. The state of Samadhi arises when the mind is totally devoid of every experience: conscious, subconscious and unconscious.

"When the mind becomes quiet, there are no ripples"

This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth: The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. Such phenomena has given rise to many examples of ritual significance. According to yogic tradition, there are 108 pithas (sacred sites) throughout India. Also, there are 108 Upanishads and 108 Marma Points (sacred places on the body).
